The Cap Is Back
Getting the Bad Taste Out of Your Mouth
Summer 1999 Abbott announced June 30th that the FDA has approved the new Norivir (ritonavir) soft-gel capsules. People on ritonavir had been forced to switch drugs or go on the liquid formulation when production problems caused the original formulation to become unstable.
The new ritonavir soft-gel caps have undergone intense tests to ensure stability, and should be available at pharmacies the first week of July. Abbott reports that those currently on the liquid form should have no trouble switching. The soft-gel caps should be stored below 77 degrees for up to 30 days, long term storage requires refrigeration between 36 and 46 degrees. The gel-caps should be taken with food and have been approved for twice-daily dosing.
