More than 52,000 Canadians participated in AIDS Walk Canada September 21-22, raising more than $2.1 million (US $1.3 million) for AIDS organizations in their communities. While Canadian AIDS Society Chair Michael Yoder called the turnout "very encouraging," he said the federal government must increase its investment in the fight. "The community-based AIDS movement is at a breaking point. Given the multiple demands placed on us and not enough funding to provide the necessary programs and services, many organizations are struggling to keep their doors open," he said. Under the Canadian Strategy on HIV/AIDS, funding to fight the epidemic has remained at $42 million (US $26.5 million) since 1994.
