Ugandan Health Minister Muhwezi Eyes Cuba for HIV/AIDS Drugs
October 17, 2002 Ugandan Health Minister Brig. Jim Muhwezi said on Tuesday he
would discuss the possibility of manufacturing antiretroviral
drugs in Uganda with the Cuban government. Muhwezi, who met
Cuban Ambassador to Uganda Ricardo A. Dawza at the ministry
headquarters in Kampala, accepted an invitation to visit Cuba.
"During my visit, I will discuss how this technology [to
manufacture AIDS drugs] can be transferred here," Muhwezi said.
He received literature on antiretroviral technology from the
ambassador and welcomed Cuba's plan to start supplying cheap AIDS
drugs to Africa. "It is good for Cuba to put the drugs on the
market at reasonable prices because that will force other
manufacturers to lower their prices," he said.
