British School Alert as Hospital Checks Student for TB

October 25, 2001

Wellacre School in Flixton, Greater Manchester, was at the center of a TB scare Monday night after it was learned that a pupil had been hospitalized with a suspected case of the contagious and potentially fatal disease. Staff and 600 students are awaiting test results after a doctor gave an initial diagnosis that one of the students has TB. The boy has been treated in the hospital with antibiotics for about 10 days. Dr. Jennifer Hill, consultant in communicable diseases for Salford and Trafford Health Authority, said, "It is unusual for children to be infective, although not unknown." Last year about 7,300 TB cases were recorded in Britain, the most since 1982.
