News Briefs World Health Organization Issues "Wake-Up Call" on Top 10 Risks to Human HealthOctober 31, 2002 Governments worldwide can improve the health of their citizens and significantly raise life expectancy by tackling the top 10 health risks identified by the World Health Organization in a report released Wednesday. After three years of research, WHO found that as many as 40 percent of the 56 million deaths around the world every year are due to 10 risk factors: 1. Underweight. 2. Unsafe sex. 3. Blood pressure. 4. Tobacco. 5. Alcohol. 6. Unsafe water and sanitation. 7. Cholesterol. 8. Indoor smoke from solid fuels. 9. Iron deficiency. 10. Obesity.
