A Spoon Full of Sugar

Winter 1999

A recent study by Abbott with HIV-positive individuals taking Norvir (Ritonavir) was conducted to find foods that make taking the nasty tasting stuff more palatable. The people on the study were asked to describe the medicine aftertaste with and without various foods. All the foods contained less than 5 grams of fat and are generally available. The aftertastes were ranked from 0 (no medicine aftertaste) to 7 (really really yucky). And, the winners were:
  1. Nutella Hazelnut Spread. 1 teaspoon on a graham cracker performed the best with a score of 1.5.

  2. Reisen Chocolate Candy Chews. 3 pieces given a score of 2.5.

  3. Oats N' Honey Cruchy Granola Bar. Scored a 3.6.

  4. Nabisco Toast Crackers with Peanut Butter. Three crackers scored a 3.9.

  5. Freshen-up Peppermint Gum. Liquid centered gum that explodes in your mouth got a 4.1.

  6. Snackwell's Fudge Brownie. Scored a 4.2.
