Red Cross Launches Southern Africa AIDS Campaign

October 4, 2002

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the world's largest relief organization, on Tuesday launched a $14 million campaign to fight AIDS in 10 southern African nations: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The countries are home to some 12 million people with HIV and 3.2 million children orphaned by the epidemic. A major food crisis in the region affects 14.4 million people, many with HIV. The five- year campaign will focus on caring for people with HIV/AIDS, fighting stigma and discrimination, and promoting education and prevention.
