Indiana: Walkers, Beasley Join Fight vs. AIDS

September 10, 2002

About 450 people braved 90-degree temperatures in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Sunday for the sixth annual AIDSWalk. Nancy Cripe, event coordinator for AIDS Task Force Inc., said the organization was hoping this year's walk would raise $55,000. Last year's total was $48,000, down from $50,000 in 2000. The walk, the nonprofit's largest annual fund-raiser, featured an appearance by Chicago Fire soccer player DaMarcus Beasley, a Fort Wayne native who competed on the US team at this summer's World Cup. "AIDS is spreading in our community, and people really need to be aware of it," said Beasley.
