One Hundred Twenty Non-Governmental Organizations Urge World Trade Organization Revision of Patent Accord to Protect Poor

September 18, 2001

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) this week called upon the World Trade Organization (WTO) to revise an accord on intellectual property rights related to access to drugs, saying that it undermined the rights of the poor. A petition signed by 120 NGOs urged the WTO's November meeting in Doha, Qatar, to overhaul the 1995 Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) accord as it relates to access to drugs and property rights when public health is at risk.

A meeting to discuss drug access was scheduled for midweek at WTO headquarters, and the topic is expected to be addressed at the 142-member WTO meeting at Doha. Last spring, NGOs pressured 39 pharmaceutical companies into abandoning court proceedings in South Africa aimed at preventing the country from using generic drugs to fight AIDS.
