Bayer Granted United States Approval for HIV Test

September 20, 2002

Bayer, Germany's largest drug maker, said Tuesday that it had received Food and Drug Administration approval for a test that identifies HIV. The test, called Versant, can detect the amount of all major types of HIV in the blood and can help monitor the disease and measure the effectiveness of therapy, Bayer said. The product will compete with two tests made by Roche Holding of Switzerland. Bayer's test eliminates a stage needed in the Roche system and covers with a single test the range of infection levels that required two Roche tests, Bayer said.
