Local and Community News Houston: Gay After-Hours Club Closed PermanentlySeptember 24, 2002 Houston's Club Nsomnia, a fund-raising project of AIDS Housing Coalition Houston Inc., has closed its doors for the last time. Matt Locklin, the executive director and co-founder of AHCH and CEO of the Club Nsomnia, said the building's lease has expired and the organization has no plans to reactivate the after-hours club. The non-profit AHCH used the "bring your own beer" club's proceeds to benefit its programs, including low-income housing for HIV/AIDS patients. In July, agents of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission raided the club and alleged illegal activities. Nsomnia operators alleged the agents conducted an "illegal search and seizure." Without the funds generated by the club, Locklin said, AHCH could not continue its operations. The coalition is now refocusing its efforts by applying for private foundation grants and requesting assistance from the general public. Organizers want to operate Harris County's only emergency shelter program, Locklin said. While AHCH's Montrose Cottages were transitional housing, the new plan would be for immediate and temporary housing. Coalition leaders hope to find other ways to continue serving HIV/AIDS clients. Established in 1994, AHCH has helped more than 400 residents through the transitional and emergency housing programs it offers, Locklin said.
