Toronto: Thousands Run For A CauseSeptember 25, 2001 On Sunday, successful charity walks and runs in Toronto, Canada raised money for medical research. About 3,200 entrants raised more than $500,000 for the AIDS Committee of Toronto and partner agencies. They took part in an 8.5-kilometer walk through downtown, starting at 2 p.m. from Nathan Phillips Square. A party in the square after the event attracted about 15,000 people. More than 5,000 runners participated in the annual Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, half-marathon and 5-kilometer run/walk along Lake Shore Blvd. About $200,000 was raised for the Marvelle Koffler Breast Cancer Center at Mount Sinai Hospital, adding to almost $1 million collected since the event began in 1995. At Ontario Place, 2,200 people raised more than $200,000 in the seventh annual Mother Daughter Walk for Heart and Stroke to support research and awareness of cardiovascular disease among women. "It was so nice to see all the families -- it wasn't just mothers and daughters walking -- realizing they were out for a good cause," said spokesperson Elissa Freeman.
