Moldova Reports Rise in HIVSeptember 25, 2001 A press release issued by Moldova's National Center of Preventive Medicine said that this year the number of people infected with HIV rose by 55 percent. A total of 157 HIV-positive people were registered in the first eight months of 2001, whereas 101 HIV patients were recorded in the same period of 2000. Since 1987, Moldova registered 1,393 people infected with HIV, twenty-four of whom have since died.
