Vietnam to Sell Condoms on University Campuses for First Time

September 26, 2002

Vietnam is to start selling condoms in October on university campuses in a bid to thwart the spread of AIDS, an official said Thursday. Plans call for distributing more than 60 million government-subsidized condoms on campuses over the next three years, said Pham Song, chairperson of the Family Planning Association. The campaign is supposed to encourage safe sexual practices among younger people. "In a country where sex is still a taboo topic, Vietnamese men still find it uncomfortable to ask for condoms, but it's time to change that attitude," Song said. It would be the first time condoms -- which will cost 150 dong (one US cent) each -- have been sold on campus. The Vietnamese News reported Thursday that more than 51,500 Vietnamese are HIV-positive, with 7,586 having AIDS and 4,121 having died since the disease emerged in Vietnam in the early 1990s. Health experts estimate the actual number of HIV-infected in Vietnam at about 135,000.
