UN's Annan Tipped for Nobel PrizeSeptember 27, 2001 UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is expected to be chosen for the Nobel Peace Prize when the Nobel committee meets on Friday to pick a winner. The decision comes at a bleak time for peace -- after this month's attacks on the United States and on the one-year anniversary of the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation. Pope John Paul II is among the 136 candidates but is not expected to win. According to Adam Daniel Rotfeld, head of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institutes, the Pope was favored for his attempt to defuse tensions among the world's religions. However, Nobel committee members bitterly criticized the pope in August for opposing the use of condoms to fight AIDS.
