Nigerian AIDS Treatment Program Delayed

September 28, 2001

On Sept. 7, Nigerian Health Minister Alphonsus Nwosu had announced the start of a trial treatment program for 15,000 Nigerians suffering from HIV/AIDS using cheap imported drugs. But last Thursday the Health Minister admitted the program had been delayed, blaming the need to carry out more training for medical staff involved. Nwosu said it was important that the drugs be distributed only to hospitals that have the ability to monitor their use, and this necessitated training of health workers.
