Trends in the HIV and AIDS Epidemic, 1998

Section 5 -- Evaluating the Impact of Treatment

The Latest Trends in Reported AIDS Cases and Deaths

AIDS incidence and deaths dropped for the first time in 1996. This drop is largely due to the impact of treatment advances in delaying progression of HIV infection to AIDS and from AIDS to death. Consequently, from 1996 on, cases of AIDS and deaths will provide a valuable measure of the continuing impact of treatment, as well as describe populations for whom treatment is either not accessible or not effective. In the first two quarters of 1997 (the most recent period for which AIDS cases can be adjusted for reporting delays), the declining trend in both AIDS cases and deaths accelerated, with AIDS cases declining 15% and AIDS deaths declining 45%, compared to the first two quarters of 1996.
