Strategies for Preventing HIV in Women

How can a woman know if she's infected with HIV or other STDs?

July, 1997

A woman can learn her serostatus by being tested for HIV. Most tests in the United States are antibody tests, which can detect antibody to HIV in a person's blood or through other body fluids, including saliva. The CDC National AIDS Hotline (1-800-342-AIDS) provides information about test sites throughout the United States.

A woman should ask her health care provider about testing for other STDs. The most common STDs have no symptoms in most women. Even when symptoms are present, many STDs have nonspecific signs and symptoms, making them difficult to diagnose without laboratory tests.
