Compassion Launches Major Gifts Program
In early August Compassion in Dying Federation launched a Major Gifts program to help fund operations and special projects. According to Barbara Coombs Lee, the effort is a natural evolution for the organization at this time. It is time to deepen our relationships with individual donors and friends and to involve them in the development and growth of Compassion. We realize we cannot indefinitely rely on the generous support of the visionary foundations whose courageous commitment was essential to bring us this far. We are deeply grateful for their support and that of the thousands of individuals whose gifts keep our advocacy, services and programs alive.
A new focus on major gifts will provide many more opportunities to assist people at the end-of-life and advocate for care and choice. Compassion's services and programs are provided to everyone at no cost. The Federation will need all our current donors, plus an expanded number of major contributions in order to grow, to continue its accomplishments and pursue its mission.
The new Director of Development, H.D. "Howie" Odden, a Certified Fund Raising Executive will implement the program. A major gift is defined by Compassion as an amount of $1,000 or more. Individuals making a gift at this level will receive many benefits. These include their own Advanced Directive reproduced on a credit card-size CD ROM to carry in their wallet, a subscription to Connections, the Compassion in Dying Federation newsletter, special seating at Compassion hosted events and a beautiful lapel pin. Many intangible benefits are derived as major donor as well. These include the satisfaction of knowing your gift will help fulfill our mission and will provide education, advocacy and case management opportunities for the thousand of people we serve each year.
Odden and Coombs Lee invite members and friends of Compassion to become more involved in the organization. They are asking everyone to consider how their gift could help meet the mission and goals of Compassion in Dying.
