On Our Own Terms: Moyers On Dying
Four-Part PBS Series Airs September 10
Compassion in Dying Federation and its affiliates are joining local coalitions across the country to improve end-of-life care in their communities in conjunction with the four-part PBS series On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying, which premieres September 10-13 at 9 p.m. E.T. (check local listings.)
Compassion in Dying and its affiliates are an important part of the local coalitions that are forming in 100 communities across the country to plan screenings, town hall meetings, training workshops for volunteers and medical professionals, inter-faith discussion groups, and many other events and activities that will raise public awareness and promote dialogue about these complex and challenging issues.
Compassion in Dying friends and supporters will be particularly interested in Part Three of the series, in which viewers meet Compassion in Dying patient Kitty Rayl as she battles cancer in Oregon, where that state's Death With Dignity Act gives her a choice that others don't have. Kitty, her doctors and her daughters have very different opinions of the option to control the moment of her death. They work through the decision in an abiding spirit of cooperation and respect. Comforted by the peace of mind that she has the final control she believes is her right, Kitty ultimately dies of natural causes.
