Since many pediatric and adult patients will now need to take the liquid formulation of ritonavir as a result of the impending shortage of ritonavir capsules, the AIDS Clinical Trials Group has compiled a list of administration suggestions from their pediatric sites. Some of these ideas have worked for only one or two patients and some have worked for more. Taste is an individual experience, so the list contains all the suggestions received.
- Frozen juice concentrate (orange, grape, fruit punch, lemonade, etc.)
- Coat the mouth with peanut butter prior to administration.
- Peanut butter sandwich before and after administration.

- Eat peanut butter crackers before the dose.
- Use toothpaste to coat the tongue prior to administration.
- Chocolate syrup (i.e., Hersheys) or strawberry syrup.
- Popsicles before and after administering the dose.
- Mix the ritonavir with flavored nutritional supplements such as Pediasure, Ensure, etc. (However, be careful not to create an aversion to these supplements.)
- Chase with cold milk.
- Suck on hard candy after dose administration.
- Licorice.
- "Pixie stix" (sour, powdered candy) before and/or after dose administration.
- Eat a Hershey's kiss and smear the chocolate around the tongue, then shoot the ritonavir to the back of the throat, chase with chocolate milk and eat more Hershey's kisses.
- Put salt on the tongue prior to administration.
- Pina Colada flavoring.
- Jelly.
- Honey.
- Use a straw to get the medication as far to the back of the mouth as possible.
- V8 Splash juice
- Peppermint ice cream or other flavors of ice cream.
- Coffee.
- Juice.
- Pancake syrup.
- Ice cream syrup.
- Cooked oatmeal and sugar.
- Chew gum after taking the dose.
- Follow the dose with a "chaser" of soda or juice.
- Take the dose with yogurt, either frozen yogurt or regular dairy yogurt.
- Pinch your nose, swallow the dose, follow with Nutella (a chocolatey, hazelnut spread, usually found in the peanut butter section of the grocery store).
- Chocolate pudding.
- Eat ice chips before and after the dose.
- Eat very salty food after the dose (e.g., potato chips or pickles).
- Swish and spit with Magic Mouthwash before the dose. (Do not swallow, there is an interaction between ritonavir and lidocaine).
- Don't mix the dose with too much liquid as it increases the volume.
