The Third International Conference on Healthcare Resource Allocation for HIV/AIDS and Other Life-Threatening Illnesses
October 11-13, 1999, Vienna, Austria
Vienna Marriott Hotel

Sponsored by: International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care

Planning is underway for the Third International Conference on Healthcare Resource Allocation for HIV/AIDS and Othe Life-Threatening Illnesses, which will take place October 11-13, 1999, in Vienna, Austria. The conference is sponsored by the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC), which represents more than 6,000 physicians and healthcare professionals in 43 countries. (A comprehensive review of the 1998 conference in Cancún, Mexico, will be featured in the February 1999 issue of the Journal of the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care. Specific presentations from the 1998 conference are on the IAPAC Web site (www.iapac.org) under the Public Policy Section, and additional presentations will be uploaded through April 1999.)

The conference objectives are to (1) reinforce the human right to healthcare and harm reduction strategies that can reduce unnecessary suffering and death from life-threatening illnesses; (2) examine the economic, ethical, and social challenges faced by a global community of individuals, governments, and non-governmental entities in their efforts to reduce unnecessary suffering and death from such illnesses; and (3) offer solutions to resolve the burgeoning global crisis in access to healthcare. This conference will explore the economic, ethical, and human rights issues that are all too often avoided in politically expedient policy decision-making. The conference theme -- "In a World of Darkness, Nourishing the Light" -- is a call for leadership in the political, economic, technical, legal, and ethical dimensions of the global healthcare crisis to create a global healthcare strategy based on the dignity and value of human life.

The core conference program will consist of daily plenary track symposia and poster sessions. Additionally, all submitted abstracts will be published in a Conference Abstract Compendium made available to all conference participants and which will be subsequently featured on the IAPAC Web site, http://www.iapac.org.
