New York Times Examines How Poverty Complicates Uganda's Focus on Abstinence in HIV/AIDS Fight

The New York Times today examines how poverty among Ugandan youth makes it difficult for some young women to remain abstinent until marriage -- the government's recommended HIV/AIDS prevention strategy. For Ugandan girls who are heads of households or who seek higher education, commercial sex work presents one of few opportunities to make money. Although abstinence is a key element of the country's HIV/AIDS prevention strategy and many young girls have joined abstinence clubs at school, poverty "can weaken even those with the most resolve," according to the Times (Lacey, New York Times, 8/18).
