New York Times Profiles Partners in Health's HIV Treatment Model in Haiti

The New York Times on Sunday profiled Partners in Health's HIV-treatment program in Haiti, which has "become an influential model in the frenetic race to expand drug treatment" in developing countries. The program, which was started by Dr. Paul Farmer in 1999 when such efforts were thought to be impossible, grafted HIV/AIDS treatment efforts onto already existing programs to treat tuberculosis. Currently, 700 villagers -- each enlisted from the country's "vast pool of unemployed and underemployed workers" -- deliver medicines to people with HIV/AIDS and TB every morning and evening, according to the Times (Dugger, New York Times, 11/30).
