Washington Post Profiles Hospice for AIDS Orphans in Guatemala

The Washington Post on Sunday profiled Guatemala's La Casa de San Jose hospice, which houses children who were abandoned or orphaned because of AIDS. Each day, an estimated 10 Guatemalan residents die from AIDS-related complications, but the stigma attached to the disease leads to difficulty in producing dependable statistics about people living with HIV/AIDS and orphans, the Post reports. Guatemala, which has a population of about 14 million and is about the size of Ohio, has the most AIDS orphans among Central American nations. "It's sad for any child to lose parents, but even more so to a disease so stigmatized here," Sergio Aguilar, a medical researcher with the AIDS Action Project for Central America, said (Jordan, Washington Post, 11/16).
