Los Angeles Times Examines Connection Between Poverty and AIDS in Africa

The Los Angeles Times on Thursday examined the connection between poverty and AIDS in Africa in the final article of its six-part series on poverty on the continent. Half of people living in sub-Saharan Africa live on less than $1 a day, and people living with HIV/AIDS "face the extra burden" of finding and paying for treatment when they already "struggle for food, clothing and shelter," according to the Times. Three million people in Africa died from AIDS-related causes last year and life expectancy has dropped to 33 years in some countries because of the disease (Maharaj, Los Angeles Times, 7/22).
