U.N. Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa Visits Lesotho on Regional Tour

U.N. Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa Stephen Lewis on Tuesday visited Lesotho as part of a regional tour that will include stops in South Africa, Botswana and possibly Zimbabwe, the Associated Press reports (Associated Press, 6/15). Lewis is scheduled to meet with Lesotho Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili and several nongovernmental groups to discuss HIV/AIDS issues, specifically those concerning women and "vulnerable" children, according to Xinhua News Agency. Lewis also plans to examine Lesotho's antiretroviral drug program and discuss issues with the U.N. HIV/AIDS Expanded Theme Group, the Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS and the Secretary General's Taskforce on Women, Girls and HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa. In addition, Lewis plans to visit the recently opened Senkatana Center, a learning facility that participates in the country's antiretroviral program, according to Xinhua News Agency (Xinhua News Agency, 6/15). About 31% of Lesotho's adult population is estimated to be HIV-positive (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 3/10).
