Ugandan President Museveni Discusses Country's HIV/AIDS Treatment, Prevention Programs in kaisernetwork.org Interview

"[T]he worst is over" for the AIDS epidemic in Uganda because many of the sick, HIV-positive people have died and others living with HIV/AIDS soon will have access to free antiretroviral drugs through a new national treatment program, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni says in a kaisernetwork.org interview recorded ahead of the XV International AIDS Conference to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, July 11-16. Museveni said that the country has the funding, supplies and infrastructure in place to begin treating the 60,000 HIV-positive people in the country who need antiretroviral drugs. Museveni also discussed the country's HIV prevention slogan, "ABC" -- Abstinence, Be faithful, use Condoms -- which he says could be used elsewhere in Africa to stem the spread of HIV. However, Museveni said that the "C" is meant to be a "fallback position," a "means of last resort" if a person "cannot manage A and B" (Interview transcript, 6/14).
