Lennox Unveils Mandela Memorial

Eurhythmics singer Annie Lennox, in Edinburgh to take part in the Festival of Politics at the Scottish Parliament, has unveiled a stone memorial honoring the city's links with Nelson Mandela and his fight against HIV/AIDS. "It's in our hands to win the fight against HIV," reads the memorial, which includes the handprints of Lennox and a 15-year-old boy living with HIV. Mandela received the "Freedom of the City of Edinburgh" award in 1997. Lennox is a UN ambassador for the former South African president's 46664 charity, named for the number he wore during his years as a political prisoner. Lennox said of the memorial, "As well as honoring Nelson Mandela, it gives the passerby an opportunity to pause and reflect upon the significance of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which is devastating the lives of millions of people across the continent of Africa and the entire globe."
