Guitarist Donates to AIDS Fund
June 5, 2003 Rock guitarist Carlos Santana and his wife Deborah will
announce today they will donate all of the money from Santana's
U.S. summer tour to the Amandla AIDS fund run by Artists for a New
South Africa. It is believed to be the first time an artist has
donated the entire net proceeds from a tour to charity.
"Basically, this is a call to action," said Santana's publicist
Michael Jensen. Details of the unique initiative will be
announced at a press conference to be attended by Nobel Peace
Prize winner Desmond M. Tutu, Arista Records President L.A. Reid,
and actress Alfre Woodard. Santana's Shaman Tour runs from June
13 to July 14. "Our attitude is that the more tickets we sell,
the more money we'll generate," Jensen said.
