Take Action! Tell Your Members of Congress: No Wall, No repeal of DACA, No Government Shutdown, No Cuts to Medicaid and Medicare in This Budget

August 30, 2017

ISSUE: This is the last week your members of Congress are home in their districts before returning to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Sept. 5 to reconvene Congress and begin deliberations on the federal budget. The specter of a government shutdown looms, as 45 has threatened to veto any spending bill that does not contain funding for his divisive, discriminatory and hateful border wall.

A federal government shutdown could create major problems for HIV clinics and community based organizations that are funded with federal dollars. Further, Republican members of Congress are pushing for severe budget cuts that would hurt the most vulnerable among us -- including deep cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP (food stamps). Meanwhile, the White House is threatening to roll back the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which shields some undocumented immigrants from deportation.

We need to make sure Congress knows: we support DACA, we welcome immigrants, we oppose a border wall, and we support funding the social safety net.

Take Action!

Your members of Congress are still in district! Don't miss the opportunity to meet with them in person by scheduling a meeting, birddogging them at a public event or even just stopping by. Find tips, talking points, a guide for setting up a meeting and more in our August Resistance Recess Toolkit.

  • Key talking points:
    • No federal funding should be used to pay for the unnecessary and discriminatory border wall.
    • Immigrants are a vital part of our community and our nation. We are counting on you to do everything in your power to protect them. Oppose the repeal of DACA. Support the DREAM Act.
    • Oppose all cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, HIV funding, and SNAP.
  • If you can't manage to see your member of Congress in person this week, that doesn't mean you can't call them! Find your members of Congress here and call each of them.

Sample script:

"My name is _____ and I live in [city, zip code]. I am a constituent of Sen./Rep. ____. I'm calling today to tell Sen./Rep. I expect them to vote for a budget that does not cut the programs that serve lower and moderate income people, like Medicaid, Medicare and SNAP, and that does not provide any funding for Trump's discriminatory border wall. We will not tolerate another government shutdown that hurts our services."
