Top 10 Events in HIV Medicine in 2016

2016: Year of the Shake-Up

The year 2016 has by no means been typical, and the world of HIV medicine has been no exception. "This was the year of the 'shake-up,'" writes longtime collaborator and expert David Alain Wohl, M.D., of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In his "Top 10 HIV Clinical Developments of 2016" roundup on, our sister site for HIV providers, Wohl sums up a year of radical new approaches and reboots of old ones -- a year of marked shifts in thinking about the ways people living with HIV receive care.

Casting a pall over the year's explorations is "the great shake-up": the recent U.S. elections, which saw control of Congress land squarely with the Republican Party (never good news for HIV funding or support), with the objectionable President-elect Donald Trump at the helm. "Perhaps no other development will have as much impact (think: comet, dinosaurs)," Wohl writes of the election results.
