The Lives They Lived and Loved: Remembering 10 HIV Advocates Who Passed Away in 2016

The year 2016 has, for many, been experienced as one of continuous and significant loss. We were shocked by the sudden deaths of boundary-pushing cultural icons such as David Bowie, Prince and The Lady Chablis, enraged by still more police killings of unarmed black people, overwhelmed by the unfathomable tragedy at Orlando's Pulse nightclub. And let's not even talk about the loss of the White House to Trump and the trauma that implies.

In the HIV community, while nowhere near the volume of loss that defined the 1980s and '90s, it still seemed we were losing community members every month: advocates of all ages, both living with and living without HIV, who had made advocacy for people living with HIV a part of their life's work. Here, friends and colleagues mourn and celebrate the lives of those we've lost in the past year.
