Damon Jacobs on Coping the Day After Trump's Victory

November 9, 2016's prevention expert Damon L. Jacobs, who is a licensed therapist, quickly put out two short videos with his thoughts for friends, families and loved ones who are despondent and confused in the wake of the unpredicted victory of Donald Trump in the United States presidential election.

"How do we establish a sense of security in a world that's so turbulent right now," he asked from his home in Brooklyn. "For a lot of us, what this will challenge us to do is ask us to consider how we infuse love into a world that seems to be very focused on fear and hate. I don't have any really great answers readily available this morning, but I can tell you this -- I will be asking these questions."

"I have a firm belief in the power of love to get us through," he says.

In part two of the video, Jacobs focuses on the near term, with suggestions for getting through the next few days. He encourages viewers to be gentle, both on themselves and with others, reminding that people experience shock, trauma and fear in very different ways. "If we can make an effort to be gentle and compassionate to each other, that will help our community move through this," he says.

"Don't make major life changes or decisions in the next week or two till you have your bearings and can make them mindfully and thoughtfully," he also cautions.

"Things are looking a certain way right now, but there are many, many men and women who have survived worse. They have written and talked about that; there's a lot out there we can learn from," he adds, recommending readings by Victor Frankel, Nelson Mandela and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
