What Are the Symptoms of Chlamydia in the Throat?

August 16, 2016

Generally, people who have chlamydia infection in the throat don't notice any signs or symptoms. Some people do have a sore throat. But as there are so many other possible causes of a sore throat, having or not having a sore throat isn't a reliable indication of whether or not you have chlamydia in the throat. If you may have been exposed to chlamydia, you need to get tested.

Chlamydia is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection that can be transmitted through a wide variety of sexual practices. Depending on the activity during which it was passed on, the site of infection may be the penis, vagina, cervix, rectum or throat.

A person who has practiced fellatio on (sucked the penis of) a person who had chlamydia infection in his penis could then have chlamydia in their throat. Usually, symptoms are so mild that they aren't noticed. If they are noticed, they may be thought of as an ordinary sore throat that does not require treatment.

Occasionally, a sore throat caused by chlamydia may be accompanied by low-grade fever and swollen lymph nodes.

To diagnose chlamydia in the throat, a swab from the throat needs to be taken. (Similarly, to diagnose chlamydia in the rectum, a swab from this area is needed). A vaginal swab or urine test will not pick up infections in other parts of the body. However not all healthcare providers ask the necessary questions about sexual behavior in order to identify where swabs need to be taken.
