Are My Antidepressants and My HIV Meds Interacting?

Yes, getting used to HIV meds can be a task in and of itself. However, for people living with other diagnoses besides HIV, it can be a science to get their treatment regimen just right. On his personal Tumblr, Joel Gallant, M.D., M.P.H., an HIV doctor at Southwest CARE Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, answers questions from people living with HIV who are concerned about a number of issues, including drug-drug interactions.

On June 27, 2015, an anonymous user asked:

I had been told Stribild and Prozac are perfectly safe together. I looked at [a] drug interaction site and was really confused. It said possible life-threatening interaction. That is alarming. It also seems to contradict itself, by saying Stribild increases blood levels and then later saying may decrease. Both cannot be true, right? Is their site not reputable? I kind of feel it is just best to avoid this issue with interactions and go with Triumeq. I heard Stribild is better though.

Gallant answered:

I don't consider this to be a significant interaction. It's true that Prozac levels are increased somewhat by the cobicistat in Stribild, but that's unlikely to be a problem unless you're on a very high dose of Prozac already.
