Jack Mackenroth Uses Sex Appeal and Social Media to Raise $50,000 for BRAKING AIDS Ride
If you're going to be an HIV/AIDS activist, like former Project Runway designer Jack Mackenroth, you have to know what you bring to the table. When I spoke to Jack on the phone, he was sure about two things: He has a passionate social media following and a sexy body that he loves to show (and that people want to see). With those two ingredients, Mackenroth has crafted a recipe that he hopes will help raise US$50,000 (the individual fundraising record) for BRAKING AIDS® Ride -- a 285-mile bike ride from Boston to New York City benefiting Housing Works, whose mission is to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS through relentless advocacy and the provision of lifesaving services. How exactly is his plan of using sex and social media going to work?
- Get a team together.
If you want to join #TheMackPack, Mackenroth's cycling team, it's as easy as registering here. The Mack Pack currently has about 15 riders and has raised over US$31,000 collectively. "I'd like to beat the team total record as well which is close to $150,000. We'll see if people who read this will be motivated enough and selfless enough to give money to total strangers who are really struggling on a day-to-day basis."
- Go over the numbers.
The BRAKING AIDS® Ride takes place on Sept. 12, giving Mackenroth just six more weeks to reach his goal. Using sexy selfies and heartfelt videos, Mackenroth plans to ask his 107,000 Twitter followers, 250,000 Facebook fans and 17,000 Instagram followers to donate to his fundraising effort.
- Bring some swag.
What better way to sweeten the deal of donating than with a giveaway? Thanks to the Martone Cycling Co., which donated two bikes in order to help with fundraising efforts, two people will be walking away with bikes that retail for over US$1,500 dollars. By donating US$100 or more, participants will automatically be entered in a raffle to win one of the bikes, while the second bike will be given to the person who (besides Mackenroth) is the highest overall fundraiser. Also, the people over at SCRUFF are supporting BRAKING AIDS® by purchasing team jerseys for Mackenroth's team. SCRUFF will also match up to US$2,500 in donations.
- Wear your awareness across your chest.
If you got it, flaunt it. And if you want to raise money for Housing Works, flaunt it. By donating US$250 or more to the cause, participants will receive a shirtless photo of Mackenroth, personalized with their name or social media handle on his chest. Besides showing off his chest, he wants these photos to remind people how personal this cause is to him. "Having been diagnosed as HIV positive 25 years ago, this is a cause that is obviously a very personal one and although I have worked with and lent my face to countless HIV charities, organizations and campaigns, I have never directly asked for donations," said Mackenroth. "I am setting the bar very high here to see what's possible. I'm hopeful that others out there are as passionate as I am and are willing to support me."
- Know your best assets.
For those looking to make a more substantial donation of US$1,000 or more, Mackenroth will offer a personalized picture of his ass with their name emblazoned across it. There have been two takers to date.
