News Justin Bieber Donates $545,000 to amfAR at Cannes Film Festival GalaMay 30, 2014 With deep pockets come deep responsibility, at least according to Justin Bieber. While at the Cannes Film Festival, Bieber appeared at an amfAR charity gala alongside other big Hollywood names -- including Sharon Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio and John Travolta. When an unnamed person donated $545,000 toward HIV research, not to be outdone, Bieber opened up his checkbook and matched the amount, according to TMZ. Attendees, including those from amfAR, were stunned. When asked whether he was serious, Bieber said that he was, and that he "just felt like doing something good." Bieber later tweeted about amfAR without mentioning the donation while amfAR praised the singer via Twitter.
The Wrap reports that the gala took in about $35 million all together, with the largest donation coming from the sale of an auction item -- a wooly mammoth skeleton dipped in gold by artist Damien Hirst. The gala also featured performances from Robin Thicke and Lana Del Rey. What do you think about Bieber's donation? Do we just chalk it up to good will? Is he trying to revamp his image?
