PM News reported that an HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) program in Nigeria's Lagos State was able to place thousands of HIV-positive clients on antiretroviral treatments, including 1,702 pregnant women and 1,143 HIV-exposed newborns who were placed on prophylaxis. An additional 5,492 HIV-positive clients also began antiretroviral therapy. A total of 115,424 clients and 40,997 pregnant women were counseled at various health facilities or from a mobile truck that travels the state.
Dr. Jide Idris, health commissioner in Lagos State, said the program has deployed a second HCT mobile truck so it can increase prevention and behavioral change. Attendance at out-patient clinics and antenatal clinics has increased greatly between 2011 and 2013, by 32 percent and 68 percent, respectively.
