Rise in HIV Identified Among Older Adults in China

April 10, 2014

This article was reported by Healio.

Healio reported that according to the Chinese National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention, the number of adults ages 50 and older with HIV or AIDS in China has increased. The researchers reviewed data from the Chinese HIV/AIDS National Case Reporting System from 2005 to 2012 on 73,521 individuals older than 50 with HIV or AIDS, analyzed demographic characteristics, and identified clusters.

The researchers found that HIV patients lived throughout the country, but 54.4 percent were in Guangxi, Henan, and Yunnan provinces. The majority were male (73.7 percent) and 3.75 percent were migrants. Approximately one-half of the individuals had progressed to AIDS. Sexual transmission was the most common route of infection, but some were infected through blood-borne transmission or injecting drug use. Older adults were more likely to have AIDS at diagnosis compared to younger adults. Additionally, the transmission hotspots were around Henan in the early years of the study, followed by Guangxi, Yunnan, and Sichuan provinces and Chongqing municipality after 2009.

The researchers attributed the increase in HIV rates to expanded HIV antibody testing, but stated that the increase in the number of older infected adults suggested a spreading epidemic among older people in China. They advised focused attention and providing specialized intervention strategies and prevention programs targeted to older adults as urgent requirements.

The full report, "HIV/AIDS Epidemic Among Older Adults in China During 2005-2012: Results From Trend and Spatial Analysis," was published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases (2014; doi: 10.1093/cid/ciu214).
