Louisiana: New Clinic Opens for HIV/AIDS Patients Who Lack Health Insurance

February 28, 2014

This article was reported by Shreveport Times.

The Shreveport Times reported that the Philadelphia Center, a Shreveport, La., nonprofit organization, would partner with the Martin Luther King Health Center to provide a free monthly HIV and AIDS clinic for HIV-positive individuals who lacked health insurance. Prior to adding HIV and AIDS services through the partnership, the Martin Luther King Health Center provided free mammograms and Pap smears and served people without insurance who had diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic health problems. All Martin Luther King Health Center Services were by appointment only at 827 Margaret Place. Call Shayla Chatma at (318) 510-9074 for more information.

An experienced HIV and AIDS doctor and nurse would work with patients, who also would have access to Philadelphia Center services, including case management, medical transportation, counseling, support groups, and a food pantry. The Philadelphia Center would continue to provide assistance with HIV medications; patients would have access to medications for chronic health issues through the Martin Luther King Health Center. Janet Mentesane, the health center's executive director, noted expanding into HIV and AIDS services would help to ensure full utilization of the clinic's office space, and she looked forward to a successful partnership.
