University of Maryland Clinic Offers Compassionate Dental Care to HIV/AIDS Patients

January 2, 2014

This article was reported by The Baltimore Sun.

The Baltimore Sun reported on the continuing supportive efforts of the PLUS Clinic at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. After the death of his regular dentist, a local HIV-positive patient went in search of a new dentist who would understand the special needs of HIV-positive individuals, and ended up finding the clinic. The PLUS Clinic has been providing dental care for low-income HIV/AIDS patients since 1989, when patients had difficulty finding dentists due to fear of transmission. Students at the clinic are trained to recognize oral conditions resulting from HIV infection, maintain a caring environment, and use infection control techniques. They also provide oral HIV testing for other dental patients. The Ryan White Care Act funds the PLUS Clinic.
