The Westside Gazette reported that more than 500 Broward County, Fla., teens participated in the 2013 Prevention Outreach Education Technology Training Teen Summit held on December 4 at the Urban League of Broward County. The summit, which honored World AIDS Day, featured AIDS Memorial Quilt panels sewn by friends, lovers, and family members of people who have died of AIDS. Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and chief executive officer of the Urban League of Broward County, emphasized that HIV did not discriminate, and the quilt panels commemorated people of all ages.
The summit, entitled "Beyond This Moment/Take a Stand" (Stay True and Never Deviate), provided a forum for students to discuss a wide variety of issues that affected their lives: social media, HIV/AIDS education, STD prevention, teen pregnancy prevention, and developing healthy relationships. The forum featured local youth talent, social service agency vendors, giveaways, confidential rapid HIV testing, and a keynote address by Dr. Patricia Garvey. Latrice Thomas, AIDS United program coordinator for the Urban League of Broward County, indicated the summit was a huge success that brought together students and people who had lost loved ones to AIDS. AIDS United services included safe, confidential rapid HIV testing, counseling, case management services, and linkages to care.
The summit's sponsors included Broward County Public Schools; Children's Diagnostic and Treatment Center; Children's Services Council of Broward County, Florida; Florida Department of Health; Opportunities Industrialization Center of South Florida; Planned Parenthood; SunServe; the Urban League of Broward County; and the United Way of Broward County.
