China, British Columbia to Collaborate in Fight Against HIV/AIDS

November 27, 2013

This article was reported by the Vancouver Sun.

The Vancouver Sun reported that China and Canada's British Columbia (BC) province had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on HIV and AIDS research. The agreement also established a three-year HIV fellowship for Chinese scientists to travel to the British Columbia Centre for Excellence (BC-CfE) in HIV/AIDS and collaborate with BC scientists. BC Premier Christy Clarke signed the MOU in Beijing on November 26.

Both China and British Columbia have adopted the treatment-as-prevention strategy for reducing HIV and AIDS. The strategy focuses on "widespread HIV testing" and treatment with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for HIV-infected people. The World Health Organization has endorsed the strategy, also adopted by the United States, Brazil, and France.

Dr. Julio Montaner, director of the BC-CfE, praised the "multilateral cooperation" and noted that the BC government's involvement in the collaboration sent a strong message of support for the scientists' work. BC-CfE also was exploring the treatment-as-prevention strategy for hepatitis B and C. Montaner stated that British Columbia was the only Canadian province implementing HIV treatment as prevention.
