I Am Thankful
Being Grateful When You Have HIV

With tomorrow being Thanksgiving and the start of the holiday season, many of us forget about actually being thankful for what we already have. With everyone rushing around shopping and preparing to spend time with family and friends, we get lost in all the madness and it is easy to forget about the small things that most of us take for granted.
This year I do not want to be so wrapped up in the madness that I actually forget to take time to say what I am thankful for. For me, this year I am thankful to be in good health, being surrounded by my family and friends, and for being loved. I am thankful to have access to heath care, being able to get my HIV medication, and for all the support I have received through this blog and from readers at TheBody.com. Now I could make the list go on and on about all that I am truly thankful for, but those are the main ones.
There are so many in our community who are not so lucky, who do not have access to health care, medications, support systems, or many of the other things we do not even think about. Such as a warm place to sleep, clean clothes, or even a roof over their heads.
The holidays are not about shopping or presents or all the things that we have turned it into. It is suppose to be a time that we look back and remember what we are so lucky to have. And when you are arguing with your family, remember that there are those who will be spending the holidays alone who have no family to argue with.
If you find yourself feeling depressed about your HIV status or any other thing, remember that you are still here, and for that simple fact you should be thankful.
This year when you are sitting down to eat your Thanksgiving meal, take a moment to just think about what you are truly thankful for. Try to reach out to someone who may not have as much to be thankful for, even if it is in some small way. Do not let yourself get lost in the madness and lose track of what the season is really about.
