An article in StarTribune recently reported that on November 21 President Barack Obama signed a bill entitled the HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act into law that lifts a ban on research into the possible transplant of organs from one HIV-positive individual to another and directs the federal health department to develop and institute standards for conducting this research. The HOPE Act also allows the health secretary to permit such transplants if the research demonstrates that the change is warranted. According to Obama, the HOPE Act is an important step, since it will improve medical care for HIV-positive individuals.
