The Post and Courier reported that a new documentary film entitled "The Gospel of Healing Volume I: Black Churches Respond to HIV/AIDS" features Bamberg, S.C.'s Mount Carmel United Methodist Church as one of five black churches that have addressed the AIDS epidemic successfully in their communities. According to the documentary's Web site, although Bamberg County has only 13,000 residents, it is home to the second highest rates of HIV and STDs in the state of South Carolina. Mount Carmel United Methodist Church has raised HIV/AIDS awareness in the rural community through an annual church event called the Hats Luncheon and has encouraged residents to be tested. The documentary film was screened on November 16 at the Lake City Bean Market Museum in Lake City, S.C., and included an education and community dialogue. More information can be found at the documentary's website.
