A new web portal has just launched to help people with HIV navigate through the new healthcare law. Obamacare and You is an on-line resource dedicated to the specific needs of people with HIV and AIDS looking for health care coverage. Supported by Gilead Sciences, Inc., the site is presented as a part of the Greater Than AIDS initiative in conjunction with Kaiser Family Foundation and the Black AIDS Institute.

The site offers a variety of features to help you get some answers such as

  • A downloadable worksheet to help people applying for coverage gather relevant information necessary to enroll and make plan choices that best suit their HIV care needs
  • A guide to the essential health benefits provided under the ACA with detail about relevance to people with HIV
  • State-specific information for all 50 states and the District of Columbia on health insurance marketplaces (including a list of available plans and information about financial assistance), Medicaid coverage options, Ryan White HIV/AIDS and AIDS Drug Assistance Programs, and other relevant HIV resources
  • A guide to the essential health benefits provided under the ACA with detail about relevance to people with HIV

The user-friendly site is interactive and will more than likely answer many of the questions visitors may have about HIV and coverage, Medicaid, Medicare, what to do if they have private insurance, or what if they are completely uninsured. Browse the site and read personal stories, a glossary for definitions of key terms in health care language, and insurance options.

Visit the Obamacare and You website to learn more. And share with your networks.

Candace Y.A. Montague has been learning about HIV since 1988 (and she has the certificates from the American Red Cross to prove it). Health is a high priority to Candace because she believes that nothing can come of your life if you're not healthy enough to enjoy it. One of her two master's degrees is in Community Health Promotion and Education. Candace was inspired to act against HIV after seeing a documentary in 2008 about African-American women and HIV. She knew that writing was the best way for her to make a difference and help inform others. Candace is a native Washingtonian and covers HIV news all around D.C. She has covered fundraisers, motorcycle rides, town hall meetings, house balls, Capitol Hill press conferences, election campaigns and protests for The DC and emPower News Magazine.
