New Web Portal Explains the Affordable Care Act for People With HIV

November 6, 2013

This article was reported by the eNews Park Forest.

eNews Park Forest recently reported that the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) launched a new web portal, "Obamacare & You," designed to assist HIV-infected people in understanding potential health insurance changes that would result from the Affordable Care Act (ACA). KFF estimated that 25 percent of U.S. HIV-infected people were uninsured and many more lacked adequate insurance. HIV-infected people would be among those most likely to benefit from ACA reforms that would remove annual and lifetime spending limits and prohibit insurance companies from denying health coverage because of pre-existing conditions. KFF also expected more low-income HIV-infected people to seek Medicaid assistance in states that chose to expand coverage.

"Obamacare & You" provided a variety of features to help HIV-infected persons navigate ACA: examples of how ACA could affect their insurance ("Find Your Story"); frequently asked questions; state-specific information about available plans and assistance, Medicaid options, Ryan White HIV/AIDS and AIDS Drug Assistance Programs, and resources; essential health benefits under ACA; downloadable worksheet to assist in gathering relevant information and selecting an appropriate plan; links to KFF's health reform subsidy calculator; and other tools.

Gilead Sciences, Inc., funded the "Obamacare & You" web portal, which was part of the Greater Than AIDS public information initiative developed by the Black AIDS Institute and KFF.
