New York: Governor Awards $1 Million for HIV/AIDS Employment

November 5, 2013

This article was reported by the Gazette (Queens).

The Gazette recently reported that New York State awarded $1.1 million to seven community organizations through the HIV/AIDS Employment Initiative. According to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D-NY), the initiative funded the seven community organizations to help low-income, HIV-infected persons find jobs and become independent. The initiative also supplied case management services to ensure HIV-infected workers continued to receive health and supportive services and access to insurance coverage.

Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Commissioner Kristin M. Proud stated that while advanced HIV treatment has helped HIV-infected people "stabilize" their health, the HIV/AIDS Employment Initiative supplied needed employment training services. The initiative also helped HIV-infected workers address challenges, including coordinating work and medical appointments, transportation, childcare, and housing.

State Health Commissioner Nirav R. Shah, M.D., M.P.H., emphasized the importance of housing and employment in fighting HIV. HIV/AIDS Employment Initiative, one of the first programs targeting HIV-infected persons' employment needs, has been operating for 15 years.

Elmcor Youth & Adult Activities in Queens' Corona neighborhood would receive $166,155 in funding through the program.
